To create the fastest cameras in IDT's line-up, the company had to focus on efficiency, both on the large scale in the camera construction, and on the quantum scale in the sensor design. To this end, IDT developed its own Polaris II sensor. Comprised of a megapixel array of relatively large 13.68 micron pixels, this sensor is designed precisely to capture more light for a brighter, clearer image. When color is not as important as capturing the image, such as inconveniently low-light situations, the 6000 ISO rating is what is needed; and even when color is required, 2000 ISO paired with a large aperture (fast) lens can accommodate one's needs.
In terms of recording speed, Y4 consists of three options. With the S1 edition Y4, users are able to record up to 3000 frames per second at full (1016x1016) resolution; with the Y4-S2, this is increased by 50% to 4500 fps, and the Y4-S3 shoots at nearly twice the speed at 5100 fps. When super fast speeds are a necessity, IDT cameras may be operated in a plus mode which nearly doubles the possible frame rates to 5900 fps, 8950 fps and 10500 fps, respectively. To accommodate for such speeds, a 1µs exposure time is made possible.
Because of the value of light in high speed photography, and the inherent requirement of high speeds, the Y4 models are perhaps the most diverse offerings, useful to all but those who require the largest resolutions. Included among those who will find the cameras a benefit are those involved in production for monitoring equipment or for durability testing, and researchers, especially those in the field of particle image velocimetry, (PIV).
